The Guardian  today ran an article called “Social Porn: Why people are sharing their sex lives online” which can be found here. It’s a great article about how social media and porn are starting to integrate online and showing that people are continuously becoming more open about sex. As a camgirl, I feel that the article can be taken one step further, or at least added to. Camgirls and Social Media basically go hand in hand after all!

Not so long ago when the internet was born, and grew and took flight, pornography was the biggest destination for public use of it. Those saucy pictures that took minutes to load ect. Then social media became a thing and now, it’s the biggest thing. But Porn and Social Media don’t have to compete with each other, that’s not how the internet works, and instead they can meld into each other to create a new platform of communications.

I wasn’t around when the internet first started, or even when it was still developing. I remember someone showing me youtube and it wasn’t a big thing, it was more of a “hey, look at this website, it’s kinda cool!” and I remember msn messenger, myspace and facebook wasn’t a thing either. My teenagehood has been under huge influence of social media though. Influence companies and corporations and governments are really only starting to harness. People are no longer in any doubt the way social media plays on free speech, leading to swaying public opinion, free marketing and advertisement ect ect.

Then porn comes into the equation. Everyone knows porn is in demand. Who can honestly say they’ve never looked at dirty pictures, or watched a porno, or read some erotica? And that’s an issue of conflict too, as seen by David Cameron’s Porn Filter plans (which I haven’t kept up with, so I have no idea what’s happening on that score!) which leads me to my next statement: Social Stigma on porn.

Because that’s there too. I grew up being very open and curious about sex, and my own sexuality. But there’s still this huge thing that it’s bad. That we should be ashamed to watch porn, or masturbate or at least talk about it. So porn stars are called whores or sluts and anyone in the sex industry is morally wrong and we should judge them as such. But we’re going to watch their videos anyway.

Can social porn be a thing then, if there is social stigma against the industry? Many social websites won’t allow things of a sexual nature to appear, such as facebook which will take down pictures of boobs. That makes sense because their users start at 13 (unless they lie). And certainly few people on facebook would want to “like” their favourite porn websites for all their friends and family to see. But by creating new social platforms targeted towards the porn watching market, that eliminates that right? And people will want to share pictures of boobs right? I would.

Oh wait. I do.

In my opinion, the current biggest and growing, influential social media site is Twitter. It connects anyone and everyone, so Jocan tweet Rihanna and Alex can tweet Oprah and I could tweet Sir Pattrick Stewart, and they could reply!  Twitter is such a strong force of power that celebrities get clauses in their divorces about it! Your tweet can be seen by your followers, they can be retweeted by anyone and you can have millions of people looking and sharing it. Whilst still keeping pretty anonymous. They also don’t ban sexual content, and I don’t have statistics but there is a whole lot of porn on twitter.

So social media and porn HAVE integrated. In a big way, and it only grows bigger. How did this come about?

First look at the Camgirl. Camgirls are girls that go on camera, live streaming to those who want to watch her. Myfreecams.com has thousands of girls that do this. And thousands of users who watch them. The users can also interact with the camgirl and this is the key to all of this. We as humans crave interaction, we are social creatures! An experience for us means more when we feel we are closer to it. That’s why video porn is more popular than picture porn. Pictures lead to video and video led to interactive video. Isn’t this a form of social media? Because it’s media, and it certainly is social. Users can talk to the camgirl and to each other and each camgirl’s room can be filled with discussions on all topics as well as naughty interactive games.

I want to stay in touch with my users also, that’s why you can find me on twitter. I share pictures and people tweet me and I reply and it’s like a continuation of what happens in my room, and it’s a way to stay connected. And I connect to other camgirls on twitter too, we all share things and we’re friends. There are accounts on twitter created purely to post and share pornographic content, or to promote camgirls. If you know what a camgirl is then you know how porn and social media have already become one. And it works despite social stigma because users create twitter accounts to talk stay connected to camgirls and the camgirl community.

Is it that far a leap to think that normal people, everyday people will want more interaction? That porn will again involve to eclipse more social media? Or social media will be more accommodating for such demands, since it’s such a sure-fire way to grow?

This blog post has been much longer than I anticipated. I’ll probably revise it tomorrow too. But the news article really got me thinking, and there’s so much more to say on the topic! Here’s a gif of me dancing topless to make up for all the seriousness!
