I’ve been talking a lot about my time at the AVN Awards this year, and I’ve been focusing a lot on my fellow camgirls. Tonight though I want to pay a special homage to a person I met there who really impacted me, and my ideas of working in Adult Entertainment. This blog is about the truly inspiring Nina Hartley.
Nina Hartley had a booth stand in a separate exhibition room to the one I was in, and every time I walked past she always had a long queue. It felt a little intimating at first, but one evening I waited until the very end when the line was almost finished and she was probably super tired, and managed to get to talk to her.
I say to talk to her, but actually, it was much more than a talk. If you don’t know Nina Hartley, then you don’t know porn. Nina is a porn star legend, winning more AVN awards than anyone else, in the history of ever and has been in the industry for 32 years. When you hear something like that, you know she’s done something right. More than right.
I think Nina Hartley has been an inspiration to most of the female porn population. She was an inspiration for me, but when I met her, she was on completely different level to what I could have imagined.
The porn industry can be tough. It can be ugly. When large amounts of sex and money come into play, things are going to get messy. But despite that, things can also be beautiful, and worth while and without a doubt, fun. Nina Hartley is beautiful, and she is fun, and she is everything that shows being in the adult industry can everything you want it to be.
When I met Nina she was friendly. Nearly everyone I met at the AVN awards was friendly, but Nina was also caring. She was genuine and she made me think “Damn, I hope one day I can rock it like she does.” She has had an amazing career and like a normal human being, her personal life has had it’s ups and downs as well. She’s learnt a lot from all her experiences and she looks out for others, including newbies like me.
That’s a kind of person you don’t meet everyday. So the question is, how has Nina Hartley managed to stay so on top of the game and become one of the biggest names in porn? The answer is simple. She is true to herself, and everyone loves her for it.
Everything Nina does in porn, she enjoys. She is truly bisexual, and enjoys being with other women. She is polyamorous and has an adventurous love life with her husband. She is completely sexed up and she shares that with us. There is nothing she does on camera that she doesn’t love doing at home, without cameras rolling.
Nina Hartley’s first piece of advice to me was this, “You need to be at the top of your own list for taking care of.” I had never really thought of it like that before. Starting up my own website, jumping into this industry, I was alway so worried I was doing things wrong, that I’m not as good as other people. I had forgotten at times, such simple advice. Since meeting her, I’ve taken all of her advice and it’s helped me so much.
I would give the same advice to everyone, in the adult industry or any other industry. Look after yourself, take time for yourself, for your love life, for your family, for your friends. If someone wants something from you, that you don’t want to give, then don’t give it to them.
But it’s not all negative. If there are things you want to explore, things you enjoy and want to share, then share them. I have tried now, more than ever, to show you guys everything I enjoy, and experience and love doing. Things I was nervous about before, like how sloppy my blowjobs can get, I’ve now embraced.
Nina Hartley has had an amazing career, and it all started with two things. Her big, blue eyes, and her trademark big bottom. It sounds silly to say those are her secret weapons, they’re not, they are simply assets that she shares and takes full advantage of.
