Putting things up your butt may sound strange to those who haven’t tried it. I mean, why would you want to put anything up it? Some of you might think the whole idea sounds gross or is something that only girls would do. But anal play is growing in popularity. Whether this is anal sex, rimming, fisting, sex toys or just fingers, the possibilities are endless. With all this in mind, the question remains – is it safe to put things up your butt?

The simple answer is yes. It is safe to put things inside yourself if that’s something you enjoy. But like all kinds of sexual activity, you need to also maintain good hygiene and safety. Nobody wants to put something up their butt that they can’t later remove.

We all know of stories where somebody lost a sex toy up their butt. Or they forgot to take something out and ended up going to the Emergency department. Obviously nobody wants to have a doctor removing a vibrator from their backside.

Safe anal toys

It goes without saying then that you need to be sensible when you put things up your butt. You don’t want to put something in there which you can’t get out for example. So when using butt plugs or other sex toys, it’s advisable to buy something which has a flared base.

Flared bases essentially stop the toy from disappearing inside you. This is common with butt plugs and anal beads. There will normally be a loop or a kind of ‘knob’ at the bottom which is designed to sit outside your butt.

This then allows you to not only direct the toy going inside but to remove it as needed. Plus by having this at the base, you can handle it without getting your hands ‘dirty’ and it won’t slip inside you. Nobody wants a dildo lost in them.

For this reason, it’s better to use specific anal toys for anal play. Whereas a normal toy might not have a flared base or is only fractionally wider and so could still slip inside, anal toys do. Love eggs used for vaginal play or ‘kegel balls’ always have a draw string attached to them so you can pull them out.

While this might technically work with anal play. It is better to have toys which you use specifically for anal stuff, even if some of them do double up for vaginal use.

Putting things up your butt that aren’t sex toys

The question remains as to whether it’s safe to put other things up your butt? Well, if you’re able to get it back out again without any damage being done – what’s the harm? The general rule of thumb may be then to use common sense.

Putting anything edible up your butt isn’t a great idea. Sure you may be able to successfully remove it afterwards but just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. If you use something squishy, there is a risk of crushing it or not removing all of it. Food play during sex is known as ‘sploshing’ and has a whole range of considerations to it.

If something like this were left inside you, it could irritate the lining of your rectum. If you  empty your bowels afterwards, you will remove most of the traces left behind. But if something stays, this could cause irritation or infection.

Similarly to this, putting anything in which is rough or sharp could damage your body. This can cause general discomfort but may also cause a tear. Due to the presence of poo around anal play, good hygiene is always essential. If you create opportunities for bacteria to spread or grow, this risks infection which you should avoid.

Enemas

Enema’s are another factor to consider during anal play. Is it safe to use an enema on yourself or others? While medical grade enemas are safe if used correctly with accurate instruction. Home made enemas can have damaging consequences.

Ordinarily a plain water enema will have little effect beyond flushing out your pipes. However the risks of using alcohol based enemas such as champagne can be much more extreme. This is due to the relatively thin membrane lining the rectum. If this tears it can cause bleeding or transfer between the contents of your rectum and your bloodstream.

Even without any tears, there is absorption present whereby fluids can transfer. The problem with using champagne enemas or other potentially hazardous fluids, is that this can in an extreme case lead to alcohol poisoning.

When you drink alcohol, depending on your tolerance levels there is usually a delay before you get tipsy. As it takes time for your stomach to begin digesting what you’ve just drunk/eaten. The colon allows absorption of water and other liquids present. Others say the sensation of champagne bubbles inside you is pleasurable.

In extreme cases though, alcohol poisoning can occur which may lead to being very unwell or could even lead to death. Alcohol enemas can also irritate your intestines and colon.

To conclude

In conclusion, it is generally safe to put things up your butt. BUT you have to be sensible about it. Anything inserted could cause discomfort or possible damage. Therefore lube is essential and making sure you only do what feels good is best.

If something is painful, it is sensible to stop rather than risk any damage. When using enemas, you need to be careful also about how much you insert and what exactly you are using.

Butt play should be fun, so stay safe and avoid A&E! Remember that sex aftercare helps to wrap up your experience in the best way possible.
