So just how do pornstars stay hard for porn movies? Veteran pornstar Kayden Kross offered the following insight to how her male co stars stay hard in Men’s Health:
“Most of our male talent uses some form of medical aid to stay hard. That can be anything from Viagra and Cialis to injections that will keep erections going without arousal. I know others have had surgeries to implant penis pumps.” – Kayden Kross
Naturally any medical aid or intervention doesn’t come without risks and there are side effects to nearly all erectile dysfunction medications. Nobody should take them without medical guidance to confirm they’re fit for it and it’s the right dose.
Performance anxiety
It’s true that everybody can get performance anxiety at times. Having sex can sometimes make you question your sexual confidence. Plus there’s always the pressure some men feel to make sex last longer.
Due to the confidence needed for performing in front of the camera, a lot of male pornstars start off as strippers or male escorts before going into porn. This background helps male pornstars stay hard. While for men who are exhibitionists or swingers, porn can be a natural transition which allows them to enjoy their lifestyle professionally.
Pre Shoot Routine
Some guys find it helpful to have a pre shoot routine to help themselves get ready. We’ve also spoken to women who comment on having fixed rituals before seeing a client or going into a shoot. It’s no different for men.
Male pornstars do have their own rituals, with many deciding to just eat a simple, light meal the night before the shoot to help keep their digestion under control. While others may avoid food altogether and only drink water to keep hydrated. Needing to have the energy to fulfil the shoot naturally makes it a bit harder so most will eat but do so with caution.
Some of the men prefer to listen to music, have a work out or take performance enhancing pills beforehand. Which often have more of a psychological effect than being an actual physiological help to get hard. But they sure help male pornstars stay hard.
We asked porn star Dean Van Damme if he had any routines before a shoot and how he controls his orgasms during a scene.
“I have a banana protein shake and coffee. Watch porn on my phone if needed to get turned on before the shoot. Often I will do 2 scenes a day, the best thing for recovery is to drink coffee, eat a small amount of food… carbs is good for energy… 1-2 hours later I can do a second scene. [Climax control] I like to edge these days, staying turned on and close to cumming throughout the scene. I just slow it down or stop if needed. This way it’s easy to cum on demand when needed. I wouldn’t edge outside of work… it’s just good to get your cumshot on demand.”
Lack of chemistry
Having a lack of chemistry when shooting porn is obviously a challenge and it doesn’t help male pornstars stay hard. When you need to have an erection to do your scene, not being attracted to your co star can be problematic. Dean Van Damme confirmed:
“It is hard [to stay hard during a scene] if you’re not attracted to your co star. This is why you sometimes need to watch porn or think about something that turns you on instead. Not being attracted to them could be physical or just their personality. Hopefully the girl is attractive and easy to work with during the scene. If not, then you think about something else that does turn you on or you pause and watch some porn to get hard again.”
A lot of companies won’t allow the talent to meet before the shoot as they prefer to keep energy high and the thrill fresher than if they got acquainted. When pornstars meet for the first time, there can be nerves but ultimately the desire to remain professional is strong.
As such when people don’t connect due to not having chemistry, some male pornstars are worried about failing to shoot. Which ends up pushing some towards using performance enhancing drugs to combat against erectile dysfunction. The pressure to perform despite a lack of chemistry can lead some men towards quitting the industry altogether.
However the majority of professional porn actors will choose to shoot their own content. This allows them to have more choice in who they film with and many are known for deliberately picking their ‘type’ each time.
Do male pornstars stay hard thanks to fluffers?
The myth of having designated fluffers on set is one we’ve probably all heard of. The idea that there are women, usually less well known pornstars or prostitutes, waiting off screen to help male porn stars stay hard for the porn shoot.
‘Fluffing’ is a term we’ve all heard in some context. But whether there’s any real truth to the idea is still under debate. Granted it may have been the case that some shoots used fluffers pre-Viagra and Caverject. But now that there are widely available medical ‘solutions’ that provide reliable erections, it’s not needed.
Plus with the rise in POV/Casting Couch style videos, as well as smaller budgets for production companies, the use of fluffers is out of fashion. Higher standards of sexual health also prevent using unregulated talent in the professional industry.

Viagra is easy for people to get hold of via a prescription from their GP or buying it onine. However it’s not always the most pleasant experience for men who take it. Because it’s fairly quick acting and easy to get hold of, a lot of male pornstars stay hard by using viagra. Viagra is designed to increase blood flow to the penis to increase the likelihood of having an erection. However it’s not without side effects, which include some of the following:

- bloodshot eyes
- flushed cheeks (which many female pornstars notice as a give away sign)
- upset stomach
- abnormal vision, such as changes in color vision (such as having a blue color tinge) and blurred vision.
- stuffy or runny nose
- back and muscle pain.
- nausea
- unable to ejaculate easily or at all
- having an erection for hours which won’t go off when you want it to.
There are alternatives to Viagra such as Cialis which can work in slightly different ways. But before taking any of these aids, you should consult your doctor first. The majority of erectile dysfunction medications are wrongly used due to men actually struggling with confidence and chemistry issues. Whereas medical aids should only be taken when medically advised.
Caverject
Caverject (alprostadil) is an injection which creates an erection on demand. Originally it was just offered to people with erectile dysfunction who struggled or were unable to get hard but still wanted intimacy with their partners. It’s not encouraged however and the vast majority of male pornstars won’t admit using it. Although it’s more common in the European industry where some shoots actually provide it and expect it to be used as it’s guaranteed boners.
The dangers of using Caverject are numerous. Including but not limited to:

- dizziness, nausea and passing out
- very bad headaches
